Spent the last few days collecting ideas for sitcom plots. Trying to settle on a pilot. I hate first episodes of television shows. They’re basically prologues, which is a euphemism for clunky backstory. My favorite first episodes don’t feel like first episodes at all. Sure, they have the expected exposition required, but generally you can transpose it into any season you like and get...

Screenwriting Tip #523
screenwritingtips: If you don’t know what you’re doing with a scene, you can’t force it. You can cut it, replace it or wait until you figure it out. Forcing it produces crappy scenes.

Watching Black Books (S1) Commentary.
It’s great fun, of course: Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey riffing while Tamsin Greig laughs like a hyena throughout. But I wish they’d had a separate commentary with Graham Linehan. His commentaries on the Father Ted DVDs are superb (Haven’t heard his IT Crowd ones but I’m sure they’re just as good.) You can learn a lot from Linehan talking about the importance of...

Sitcom Time
So I’m writing a sitcom now. The feature I’ve been developing hasn’t really been grabbing me lately. I think I’m slightly burnt out from finishing a feature before so maybe I need a break. So I’m putting it aside for now and developing this sitcom idea I’ve had for a while. Actually, remember that post about a pet store and a fella called Wolfgang Thud?...

A Bit Low
I hate waking up feeling depressed. But it does happen. Can’t deny it. Feelings of loneliness, primarily. Wishing there was someone to wake up to. But there isn’t. And probably won’t be for at least another 7 years. To my credit, I am trying. I’ve been going out more, looking around actively for someone new. But it ain’t easy when you’re living in a New Jersey...

Awesome!
Transferred one of my student loans to a Graduated Payment plan. Which I don’t have to start paying off again until March. Which will gradually accumulate interest as time goes by and become an even more cumbersome loan by then. Funny what a victory looks like to me these days.
